Phase I (2007-2009)
Process studies on old landfills
Five representative old landfills are characterised as follows:
- Methane formation in the landfill body
- Methane oxidation in the top cover
- Methane emission from the landfill
- Design and properties of the top cover.
Process study on an MBT landfill
A
test cell with a cover system combination of capillary barrier and
recultivation layer is being constructed on a landfill taking in
mechanically and biologically pre-treated waste. Analyses of methane
formation, oxidation and emission as well as of soil properties will be
conducted as described above.
Phase II (2010-2012)
Validation in test fields
One
of the previously investigated five landfills will serve as a site for
the construction of up to three test cells with optimised cover design.
Landfill gas influx into the test cells, methane oxidation and methane
emission as well as cover properties will be assessed using the same
tools as described for phase I.
Preparation of technical guidelines
The core deliverables of the MiMethox project include two technical guidelines for knowledge transfer to stakeholders:
- Technical guideline for balancing of methane fluxes on landfills.
- Technical
guideline for the design of landfill covers optimised for the microbial
oxidation of methane.
